Residential Energy Rebate

Effective July 1, 2015, the Residential Energy Rebate ended.

Please note that remaining applications for rebates must be received within 36 months after the eligible product to which it applies has been supplied.

The Residential Energy Rebate (RER) provides a rebate equivalent to the 8% provincial portion of the 13% Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) charged on consumption of energy for residential purposes.

The rebate is available to all residents regardless of income who are invoiced for energy use in their residence and is based on the pre-HST cost of residential energy.

To be eligible for the rebate, the energy product must:

  • Be consumed for residential purposes
  • Have been purchased from an HST registrant and
  • Have HST charged

Eligible/Ineligible Sources

Eligible sources of energy include:

  • Furnace oil
  • Stove oil
  • Firewood
  • Wood pellets
  • Kerosene
  • Propane (for tanks with a capacity of 4.5 pounds or greater)
  • Electricity

Ineligible sources of energy include:

  • Gasoline
  • Butane
  • Coal briquettes

The Residential Energy Rebate will be effective for invoices dated on or after September 1, 2011 for heating oil, propane and other energy products.

For electricity, the rebate will be applied to invoices with a meter reading date on or after October 1, 2011.

The following products are eligible for a point of sale rebate when delivered by the supplier to a residential establishment:

  • Furnace oil
  • Stove oil
  • Propane
  • Electricity

Application Process

Applications are only required where:

  • The credit is not issued upon purchase (not a participating point of sale rebate vendor)
  • The property is not 100% residential (there is a commercial component)
  • The rebate is in respect of residential use by a charity or non-profit organization
  • Participating suppliers are seeking reimbursement for rebates given to customers
